Project Description
For this project, Technologists, Inc. designed 23km and constructed 21 km of asphalt pavement surface road (with 1.5 m gravel shoulders) from Jalalabad to Shali Kot in Nangahar Province of Afghanistan—through the notorious Tora Bora region. Ti also designed 10 km and constructed 8 km of road South of Jalalabad. In some cases the roadway was paved for the first time.
Much of the roadbed was given the proper base structuring in order to ensure long wear. Bridges, culverts, gabion crossings, at-grade concrete wadi crossings and other related structures were constructed as required over rivers and wadis, and roadways as they cross these areas were reinforced as needed to prevent erosion of the roadbed. Reinforced concrete slabs were used in high erosion areas.
These roads are important to local security as well as the local economy. Better road conditions allow farmers to get their goods to market, allow quicker access to health clinics and hospitals, and help school children to reach school along safer roads.
