Khogyani Macro Hydro Dam Survey and Design

For many of Afghanistan’s remote mountain villages, access to even small amounts of electricity can make a significant improvement in people’s lives.

In this project for the Nangarhar Provincial Reconstruction Team, Technologists, Inc. (Ti) conducted engineering studies in three villages to determine the feasibility of installing micro-hydropower plants in local streams. The studies were used to design systems capable of generating from 10 to 30 kilowatts of electricity, depending on water flow.

The resulting systems are inexpensive and simple to maintain, yet they generate enough electricity to provide nearby households with electric power for operating lights and small appliances.
